Geert Van Hootegem

Geert Van Hootegem is a leading expert in the domain of labor organization and change management. He builds on the theory and practice of Total Workplace Innovation by relying on the modern sociotechnical systemdesign. As in Lewin’s quote ‘There is nothing as pracitcal as a good theory’, Geert’s way of work could be described as ‘evidence-based consulting’.

The lectures of Geert are strongly appreciated by customers, employees and social partners at home and abroad. He inspires them with his enthusiasm and let them explore alternatives. Through his experience in business and intellectual baggage, he reads organizations in a unique way.

Geert is one of the architects of the ecosystem being developed around Total Workplace Innovation. Together with twelve Flemish organizations, he founded Flanders Synergy. He was co-founder of the Institute Ulbo de Sitter. He is also one of the driving forces behind the European Network of Workplace Innovation (EUWIN).

Geert studied sociology and got under the spell of organizational structures and their effects on man and society. He decided to spend more than 10,000 hours to fully fathom organizations to devise alternatives. These efforts paid off: Geert earned a prestigious award for his thesis ‘The bearable slowness of management’.

Since 2000, Geert is full professor at the KU Leuven. He publishes in domestic and foreign journals and popular media. He is often consulted by both the written and audiovisual press.

Geert can not sing or draw. So it became watching. He was once the youngest nature guide. Whether it is in his large garden where his ouessant sheep graze and his minnows swim, or during one of his trips, the binoculars are always in hand.
